Strikes

Learn more about basic Taekwondo striking techniques, including punches, thrusts and strikes.

Striking techniques in Taekwondo include punches, knife hand strikes, elbow strikes and a range of hand-based attacking movements. While Taekwondo is often recognised for its kicking techniques, striking remains an important part of poomsae, self defence and technical training.

This guide covers some of the most common Taekwondo striking techniques, with simple diagrams and beginner-friendly explanations to help you understand how each movement works. Click any image to enlarge the step-by-step diagrams.

Punch – Jireugi

  • The most basic strike taught in Taekwondo, and used universally in other martial arts.
  • Can be used to strike high, middle or low section.
  • Used in Poomsae and competition sparring.

Reverse Punch – Jireugi

  • Same movement as a basic punch, but comes from the side opposite to your leading leg.
  • Uses body rotation to generate greater power.
  • Used frequently in Poomsae from basic to advanced.

Inward Knife Hand Strike – Sonnal An Chigi

  • Fingers must be held tightly together when striking.
  • Wrist should be straight.
  • Appears frequently in Poomsae and can be useful in close range self-defence.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Overextending punches – Reaching too far can reduce balance and leave you open to counters.
  • Dropping the guard – Keep your opposite hand in a guarding position while striking.
  • Poor wrist position – Incorrect wrist alignment can reduce power and increase the risk of injury.
  • Using only the arms – Strong strikes often use hip rotation and body movement to generate power.
  • Tensing too much – Staying relaxed before impact can improve speed and fluid movement.
  • Lack of control – Focus on accuracy and technique before trying to strike with maximum power.
